A conversation with Morgan Parker, Assistant Professor of English Literature andAdam Dalva ’12, President of the National Book Critics Circle Morgan Parker is a Swarthmore English professor and an acclaimed poet, essayist, and novelist. The author of five books, her 2019 poetry collection, Magical Negro, won the National Book Critics Circle Award and her 2024 collection of essays, You Get What You Pay For, was a Lambda Literary Award finalist. Described by The New York Times as “a dynamic craftperson” of “considerable consequence to American poetry” and hailed by The Atlantic for her “expansive and gifted mind,” Parker’s writing addresses everything from respectability politics and mental health to Black liberation and the cultural significance of Beyoncé.
