SwatTalk: Laura Hirai '22

Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at 12:00 PMEastern Daylight Time UTC -04:00

As a young girl in Japan, Laura Hirai ’22 fell in love with baseball and found the sport welcoming to all. That changed when she tried to attend a U.S. baseball camp and was told it was boys-only — her first real obstacle. Like many Swarthmore students, Laura saw these setbacks as challenges. Now 26, she’s become a global face of women’s baseball. Laura was the first, and so far only, woman to represent Great Britain in U18 baseball, the first “ball girl” for the New York Yankees at the first Major League Baseball game in England (2019), and a fifth-round pick in the new U.S.-based Women's Professional Baseball League, set to debut in August. She also played varsity softball at Swarthmore. Join Laura and Ana Apostoleris Rivera ’13 for a conversation about her trailblazing journey and the future of women’s baseball.
