Jon Raymond ’94 is one of the most accomplished and versatile American writers working today. He is the author of five novels, including The Half-Life (a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2004) and Freebird (an Indie Next Great Reads selection), as well as the short story collection Livability (winner of the Oregon Book Award). He’s also collaborated on six films with the director Kelly Reichardt, including Old Joy and First Cow, and on the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce with Todd Haynes, for which he was nominated for an Emmy. His new novel, God and Sex — about a middle-aged, “minor writer of spiritual texts,” his affair with his friend’s wife, and his apparently successful request for divine intervention — has been hailed by The Washington Post as “an unexpected answer to readers’ prayers for fiction that dares to approach the treacherous border of faith,” while The New York Times has declared that “profound, ancient questions animate the book, and justify its oversize title.” Please join Jon for a conversation with the artist Ed Johnson ’93 about writing for the page and for the screen, God and Sex . . . and Swarthmore.
