“Financial Activism: How Everyday People Can Help Create a More Just Economy” with Jasmine Rashid ’18

When thinking about their finances, people come across all sorts of conventional wisdom. They may hear that they have to choose between building meaningful wealth for themselves and their families or supporting social movements that aim for a better future. Some believe they need to become certified financial "experts" to gain economic empowerment and effectively contribute to their communities. Others may feel powerless to change the financial system simply because they do not belong to the One Percent.

Jasmine Rashid ’18 contends that these are myths — or, as she calls them, “money myths.” A social change strategist focusing on money and movements, Jasmine’s work has ranged from engaging in a national campaign to divest bank financing from private prisons and immigrant detention to serving as the Director of Impact for an impact investment advisory firm. In her recent book, The Financial Activist Playbook, Jasmine offers eight strategies for people to reclaim wealth and collective well-being in their everyday lives.

In partnership with the Young Alumni Ambassador Program, please join Jasmine for a conversation about what it means to be a financial activist in these times, how people can influence the levers of money and power around them for good, and why there’s more cause for hope than despair in the movement to a more regenerative economy.
